When we think about seeds, we usually are thinking about Spring. Tending the garden in this early season is a process of helping the seeds to germinate and take root. Of course, in the Summer months, what was once just a seed has grown into a healthy plant or flower, bringing a little bit of God's wonderful creation alive right before our eyes.
Being a part of the church is much like one who plants seeds and tends the garden. Jesus' parable of the seeds [Luke 8.4-15, Matthew 13.1-23, Mark 4.1-20] is one example of how that metaphor is used to describe the Christian life. Sometimes we get to plant seeds and watch them grow and thrive. Other times, we are able to only plant the seeds and then have to turn the tending over to another.
This past year, we have had many seeds planted for our families. Seeds that have begun to break ground and take root. But now the tending is turned back to all of us, as we navigate the future together.
Jesus wants us to tend the gardens of our ministries together. We are a kind of "truck farm" for the love of Jesus: engaged and empowered. So, let's not let the hard work of seed-planting go to waste. The garden needs tending and you and I are the ones called to carry on this important work.
